Why Natural Soaps are Better for You!
Today I wanted to talk about just why natural soaps are so good, by explaining why traditional soaps are so bad! This comes down to a lot of factors, so I’m going to examine a few of the specific ingredients that you could find in your traditional, chemically-made soaps.
Triclosan
This is the first ingredient of chemical soaps that you should pay attention to. It’s found in most of the mass-produced soaps, as well as hand sanitizers, and can have some very bad effects on our health. After a quick visit to Wikipedia you’ll find out:
“Triclosan is found in soaps (0.10-1.00%), deodorants, toothpastes, shaving creams, mouth washes, and cleaning supplies and is infused in an increasing number of consumer products… Triclosan has been shown to be effective in reducing and controlling bacterial contamination on the hands and on treated products.”
The truth is that there are a number of concerns as to what this product can do to our bodies. Studies show it may cause bacteria to become more resistant if we over-use it, which surely would negate its purpose. Not only this, but it can damage our health in the following ways:
- It is a carcinogen (can cause cancer),
- It can irritate the skin,
- It can cause allergies,
- Developmental/ reproductive toxicity – i.e. can lead to a number of problems with babies.
- And more!
The good news is that not all soaps contain this – and those that don’t contain it will still be effective at cleaning your hands properly! So when you’re out looking for a soap, try finding one that doesn’t contain triclosan and is also unscented. Your best bet is to make your own, which I also show you on this blog in my natural homemade soap page, but not all of us have the time. Just be careful about what you buy and you should be fine!
Oh – and remember to use all natural soaps if you can!
